§ 42-26. Authorization.

  • (a)

    The sheriff of the county is authorized to appoint and commission a maximum of 67 uncompensated deputies, in addition to all salaried employees in the sheriff's department, which are authorized as deputies in appropriation ordinances.

    (b)

    All deputies authorized under this section shall meet the requirements which are more fully explained by a memorandum from the prosecuting attorney's office which is adopted by reference and filed with the ordinance from which this section derives in the office of the county clerk and shall provide proof of residency in the county for all deputies hired after April 12, 1984.

    (c)

    It is the intent of this article to authorize the sheriff to appoint and commission any person who meets the standards set out in this section up to the maximum number authorized in this section, whether or not such person shall be otherwise fully employed.
